Badgr 2.0 … Bigger images? You got it!

August 23rd, 2006

The one thing that everyone seems to want from badgr is the ability to have a larger image size for the zoomed photo. Having recently switched badgr to FlashPlayer 8, we can now use the bitmap handling features.

Well after playing with the problem a little bit I've made a little tech demo so you can see what we're going to do... (this will require FlashPlayer 8 on your browser) Enter an image url into the space provided and click the button... The image URL can point to an image of any size at all, it will then be displayed scaling from a 25px square to a 190px square... judge for yourself how it looks and how long an image takes to load, but it's working very well for me... I've tried images up to 1024x768 and they would be a little too big, Multiply the loading time by 25 for the standard badgr frame, and you can imagine it'll be a bit of a lag.

Anyway, enough chat, get an image URL and copy or type it into the box...

Let me know how you get on, I'm keen to hear what people think...

One small point is images will need to be loaded via a proxy script (a stipulation of the FlashPlayer security model) but I think it shouldn't be a problem.

If you want to try it out with a different image, just hit the reload/refresh button on the browser...

can you Digg it? can you Digg it? is it del.icio.us? is it del.icio.us?

    Hi Shurafa,

I have decided that the easiest way to incorporate the new features, Image sizing and RSS feed consumption are going to require a re-write. This will take about a week or two at best, I’m also moving to a new fulltime client next week so this will probably mean I have less spare time to concentrate on Badgr, that and meeting the girl of my dreams a little while ago.

I’ll probably be starting a site / blog dedicated to Badgr too, but that’s less important than getting these new features in and making Badgr easier to update.

Thanks again for your enthusiasm Shurafa, hope the old Capture the Flag NYC is going great, Good Times….

This doesn’t seem to be working. Sounds pretty cool. Any luck integrating this into badgr? Would just like to agree with previous comments that adding the option to display as a single large image slide show would be very slick. Flapi does an ok job at this, but its customization can’t touch Badgr. (http://flapi.f4l.be/examples.html)
