Polkr

I know I’ve posted this already but I’ve added a few images to help explain what it does…

Polkr is a little flickr experiment I’ve been working on today, you can see a demo in action although it’s not ready for public distribution at the moment. In a nutshell Polkr creates a digital dot masked image from a flickr thumbnail image… hmmm ok, this’ll be easier for you to look at rather than have me try and explain… I suppose a much better nutshell would have been it’s cool have a look…

Here’s a demo image

(Flash 8 player required)

This is just an early development stage, and it’s likely that I’ll only be using Polkr as an artistic toy, anyway if you think it’d be neat to be able to use it with your photo’s post me a comment and let me know.

If you’re wondering why it’s called Polkr… Polka dots… and Polkr’s a better name than dottr… (isn’t it?)

idFindr and Badgr2.0 update.

Just a quick note to let you know the Badgr2.0 page has been updated and idFindr now has it's own page.

Please note: FlashPlayer 9 is required for idFindr, badgr2.0 requires FlashPlayer 7 or later.

idFindr

Go to the idFindr page

If you've used badgr you'll know that you need to get a flickr id from someplace or another, and with badgr 2.0 that can mean either a user id, group id or a photoset id, these can be a pain to find and although I'd provided a link to the idGettr site to help you get your userid or groupd id... it wasn't really good enough.

Worse still if you wanted to display the photos from a photoset you were supposed to figure how to get the photoset id for yourself (it's the last number in the url of the photoset gallery page in Flickr.)

All of this seems like a lot to ask, and apart from me becoming a bit of a Flickr geek, many (let's say most) people will probably glaze over if I asked what a photoset id was... (either that or they just walk away shaking their head, just like that lady did at the bus stop...) ...But I'm veering wildly off topic here and I need to get back on track.

Anyway, so I decided to build a web application which is basically idGetter on steroids (apparently saying "on Steriods" will impress you.) Not not only will it get a group id, photoset id and user id from a Flickr URL, it'll also let you get a userid by searching for an email address (much easier to remember than a dumb URL right!?) or even better than that, by searching for a flickr username... Tell me, what could be simpler?!?

Even more amazing, idFindr will also list photosets and groups that a user belongs to. It's really quite a helpful little thing.

It will have it's own page soon enough but in the meantime it will have to make do with this lowly blog post... Ladies, gentlemen... I give you idFindr.

(Built with Flex2 requires FlashPlayer9)

I almost forgot to mention that idFindr is also integrated into the badgr2.0 construction kit. (sorry about the excitement.)

Badgr 2.0 and Construction Kit released

badgr is a very cool photo badge to display you Flickr photostream on a webpage, it works with all known blogs and is also confirmed to work with MySpace. It uses Flash Player 7 to run and the construction kit uses Flash Player 9, you can upgrade to the latest Flash Player by clicking here...

badgr2.0 and Construction Kit are ready to go now so you can download badgr2.0 to use on your website right click here and download the badgr2.swf (Save link as in FireFox or Save Target As... in Internet Explorer.)

Upload badgr2.swf to your website and install SWF Object (instructions for SWF Object are available on their site) note which folders you copy badgr2.swf and swfobject.js into.

With Flash Player 9 installed you will be able to see the badgr2.0 Construction Kit below, if not upgrade Flash Player on your machine*.

The construction kit will let you tweak many different settings and you can completely customise the photos you display and the way that badgr2.0 looks on your page.

When you are happy with your settings you can click on the generator tab and you will find code to insert badgr2.0 into your page, there are SWF Object and MySpace versions of the code.

If you are using badgr2.0 from your own site make sure the badgr2.swf and swfobject.js have the right path.

You can find the entire development notes of badgr and badgr2.0 by clicking here...

*Sorry to the Linux community, I know Flash Player 9 isn't available for you yet, but it's coming soon, I will be posting a more detailed installation guide as soon as I can, here's a slightly out of date list of the query string vars that badgr uses to help you install it manually.

Badgr 2.0 – Construction kit preview updated

The Badgr2.0 construction kit is almost ready and will build semi-working code, I've run out of time to complete this today, so the final version should be up here tomorrow.

In this latest release I've fixed a few performance problems with the frame construction GUI and also swapped out the numeric steppers and switched to vertical sliders instead, which should be nicer to use.

If you have any comments now's the time, the final should be posted in about 24 hrs or so.
